Monument to Ernst Thelmann
I would like to suggest to your attention the monument which is not very well-known to the guests of our city and, unfortunately, even to the citizens of it. There is a monument to the outstanding antifasist, Ernst Thelmann, who was killed by the Nazis in 1944. Ernst Thelmann was a great friend of our country . Ernst Thelmann (16 April 1886 – 18 August 1944) was the leader of the Communist Party of Germany ( during the period of the Weimar Republic).
He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1933 and held in solitary confinement for eleven years, before being shot in Buchenwald on Adolf Hitler's order in 1944. During the Spanish Civil War, several units of German republican volunteers (most notably the Thelmann Battalion of the International Brigades) were named in his honour.
Some interesting facts from the history of this monument in Tsarskoe Selo. Its history started before the Great Patriotic War. Opposite the school 409 there was the bronze Monument to V.Lenin. When the war began and fascists were near the St.Petersburg, this monument was taken to Germany and was hidden during the years of Nazi occupation by German communists . German Communists secretly buried it in the ground, risking their own lives. For their heroism (or due to high costs of transportation of the monument) the monument to Lenin was presented to the city Iceleben. But German Communists were grateful: fifteen years later they gave their sister -city Pushkin a sculptural portrait of their leader Ernst Thelmann. Since May 8, 1960 Pushkin became the home to this mysterious monument...
So we can say that this monument is a returned gift of German friends from Manfred’s citizens to Pushkin as a sign of a deep gratitude for the defeat of fascism by the Soviet Army in the Great Patriotic War. The monument was created on the project of talented German sculptor V. Arnold and delivered in Russia, in our native town. The official inauguration of the monument took place on the 8 May 1960 and among the guests of this memorable event was the widow of Ernst Thelmann - Rosa Thelmann , who was liberated in 1945 by the Soviet troops from the death’s camp Buchenwald.
Residents of the city honour the memory of the outstanding figure of the anti-fascist’s movement, bring flowers to the foot of the monument, organise meetings of memory. German people remember the hero –antifascist, we can see monuments to Thelmann in Veimar and in Berlin.

Памятник Эрнсту Тельману
Добрый день! Меня зовут Юлия, и я хочу предложить вашему вниманию небольшую экскурсию к одному из памятников нашего города, который не очень хорошо известен гостям и, к сожалению, даже жителям нашего города. Это памятник выдающемуся антифашисту, Эрнсту Тельману, погибшему от рук фашистов в 1944 году.
Эрнст Тельман был большим другом нашей страны. Эрнст Тельман (16 апреля 1886 года -18 августа 1944 года) был лидером Коммунистической партии Германии (в период Веймарской республики). Он был арестован гестапо в 1933 году по обвинению в спровоцированном нацистами поджоге Рейхстага и содержался под арестом в течение 11 лет. В августе 1944 года без суда был расстрелян по приказу Гитлера. Во время гражданской войны в Испании несколько добровольческих отрядов из немецких республиканцев сражались против генерала Франко, некоторые из добровольческих бригад носили имя Тельмана.
Некоторые интересные факты из истории этого создания этого памятника и появлении его в нашем родном городе.
Напротив школы 409 до Великой Отечественной стоял бронзовый памятник В.Ленину. Этот памятник был вывезен в Германию и был спрятан в годы нацистской оккупации немецкими коммунистами. Немецкие коммунисты тайно закопали его в землю, рискуя собственными жизнями. За героизм (и из-за высоких затрат на транспортировку памятника) памятник Ленину был подарен городу Айслебен. Но немецкие коммунисты были благодарны русским друзьям: пятнадцать лет спустя они подарили своему городу-побратиму Пушкину скульптуру своего лидера Эрнста Тельмана. Начиная с 8 Мая 1960 года, город Пушкин стал домом этому мистическому памятнику. Таким образом, мы можем утверждать, что данный памятник является ответным подарком немецких друзей из города Манфреда жителям Пушкина в знак глубокой благодарности за разгром фашизма Советской Армией. Памятник был создан по проекту талантливого немецкого скульптора В.Арнольда и доставлен в Россию, в наш родной город.
На открытии памятника 8 мая 1960 года присутствовала вдова Тельмана – Роза Тельман, освобожденная в 1945 году советскими войсками из лагеря смерти Бухенвальд. Жители города чтят память выдающегося деятеля антифашистского движения, приносят цветы к его подножию. В Германии тоже помнят героя – антифашиста: ему установлены памятники в Веймаре и Берлине.
